AHSS English Teachers Ms. Loma Al Khatib, Ms. Batool Aburub, Ms. Amy Reid, Ms. Meryem Abiss, Ms. Julia Dahdah, Mr. Refad Khalayleh, and Mr. Jeff Dahdah prepared the students for the English Writing Competition and judged the entries. Ms. Alia Aqrabawi, Mr. Mohammad AL Zudy, Mr. Husam Ghaith, Ms. Agia Dahdah, Ms. Nada Abdelnour, and Mr. Sufian Odeh were instrumental in the planning of the competition and the awards ceremony as well as the recognition of the students.
Here is a message from Ustaz Tarek, school director, about the competition.
We recently held a Writing Contest for students in grades 4-12. I was proud of our staff who planned and helped with the whole process. I was also proud to see so many students participate. Their participation was an indication of how confident many of our students feel with their language skills.
I’d like to encourage parents to read stories with their young children (ages one year to eight years old especially). Story books help foster a love for knowledge and a love of reading. Students need to enjoy books from an early age and should not associate books with “rote learning” or the “memorization of facts”. To be a good public speaker or a good writer, one must have skill with words, and words come from lots of reading, analyzing, and understanding. Parents can play a huge role in fostering a love for reading. Your role is crucial.
Note: The Writing Contest was held to honor the memory of Sue Dahdah, school co-founder and director. An educational video about AHSS and Miss Sue (RIP) was published in July
2022. This is a link to that video:
